In April 2019, the Association of Livestock Breeders of Ukraine (AZhU) requested that the State Veterinary Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection of Ukraine sign a veterinary certificate with China for exporting pork.
The agency said that Ukraine is currently conducting official negotiations on this issue with the PRC.
“In May this year, the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection sent a letter initiating negotiations on the possibility of exporting pork to China to the General Administration for Customs Affairs of the People’s Republic of China through diplomatic channels. This was announced to the Association of Livestock Breeders by an official letter from the head of the State Food and Beverage Service of Ukraine Volodymyr Lapa, ”the AJU notes. It is expected that due to the losses caused by the spread of African swine fever in China, the country will significantly increase the volume of pork imports, and world prices for this product will increase significantly. In AZhU consider China as a promising market.
“We are pleased that our initiative, the initiative of Ukrainian pork producers, has been heard. This is a very important strategic step. Opening an export market of such a huge country as China will give our pig farmers great opportunities for development. The negotiations between Ukraine and China on the export of pork have been going on for a long time, however, one of the constraining factors was the African swine fever in Ukraine. Now both countries are in a similar epizootic situation due to an outbreak of ASF in China, but in Ukraine the situation with ASF is stable and controlled, ”said the head of the Association of Cattle Breeders of Ukraine Irina Palamar.
