Periods of drought and water scarcity in agriculture can be offset by process water. The Council and the EU Commission have agreed on changes in the use of wastewater.
In the future, clean wastewater can be used for irrigation in agriculture during times of climate change, especially in times of drought.
The supply of clean water during periods of climate change and drought in agriculture will be brought to a new level. This week, the Council of Ministers and the European Commission agreed on minimum standards for wastewater reuse in agriculture.
Direct speech: “Thanks to measures to save water and increase efficiency, the use of restored water in the agricultural sector can play an important role in combating water shortages and drought, while ensuring complete food safety,” said EU Commissioner for the Environment Virginius Sinkevičius on Tuesday in Brussels.
There is much more water on Earth than it seems. If you delve a few tens of kilometers in the thickness of the continental plates, you can find whole underground rivers.
Currently, wastewater is reused in only a few Member States, especially in southern Europe. The aim of the new rules is to ensure a more reliable supply of clean water to EU farmers.
This can help them adapt to climate change. The European Commission said that with clear minimum requirements, the new rules should provide safe methods for the use of process water. Public confidence in agricultural products in the EU internal market should be supported accordingly.
Agreements reached to amend the Directive on the treatment of urban wastewater must be formally approved by the European Parliament and the Council.
