In the North Brabant region (Netherlands), the number of pigs fell sharply at the end of 2019. According to experts, the decline will continue in the coming years.
The number of pigs kept in the Netherlands has probably declined recently. This is 2.4% fewer pigs than at the same time last year.
Almost half of the pigs, 5.76 million animals, were kept in the province of North Brabant. There, statistics also noted an absolute strongest decline in stocks.
According to research, using a joystick and a piglet, pigs play video games better than some monkeys.
The decline in the number of pigs in North Brabant is likely to continue in the coming years. By 2022, farms should meet significantly more stringent environmental requirements, which are mainly related to reducing ammonia emissions.
According to experts, many pig farmers cannot afford the necessary investments. In this regard, the Dutch government launched the “Warm Reorganization” program in November 2019, for which a total of € 180 million was allocated to acquire production rights and compensation payments for pig farmers who are ready to leave.
