Potato prices in Ukraine have been holding steady at record levels since the end of last season.
“Price hikes this season are mainly related to weather conditions. - Due to heavy rains, farmers in the Western region were even forced to transplant potatoes at the end of May.
Summer also did not please us with the weather, but the situation even in the context of one region is uneven: there are areas where there was no rainfall for more than 2.5 months, there are areas where the plantations were completely flooded, and some farms managed to save on irrigation and today harvest at a level 40 tons / ha. ”, Says Anatoly Arshulik, Chairman of the Volyn Potato JC.
“Due to heavy rains in May and drought in June, farms in the South have fallen 1.5 times. A commercial batch of early and medium potatoes could be found only from large producers.
Accordingly, prices have been and still remain at record highs. It's too early to speak about the forecast for the second half of the season, it will depend on the weather in the next two months. The worst case scenario is drought in August and cold and rainy weather in September, ”says Gordeichuk.
“Every year, the population grows less potatoes on their own and harvests less in the winter.
The client goes shopping at Shuvar year-round - this trend, in my opinion, will only intensify in the coming years and will contribute to the development of commercial production of potatoes, ”says Tatyana Getman, head of the Analytics department of the Shuvar ORSP.
Today, at the largest site of the Shuvar ORSP, potatoes are offered at 9-10 UAH / kg. (0.32-0.35 Euro / kg.) - The highest price level in the last 5 years. Approximately the same prices for potatoes in neighboring Poland. A year ago, in Poland and Ukraine, potatoes were 2 times cheaper.
