A bipartisan group of legislators requires the Trump administration to force the European Union to include agriculture on the agenda of upcoming trade negotiations.
A group of 114 legislators, organized by Indiana Republican Jackie Walorski this week, wrote a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lightheiser stating that the Agreement with the European Union does not include agricultural trade would be unacceptable from their point of view.
It should be recalled that the US and the EU recently reached a preliminary agreement on granting the US access to the EU quota for natural beef, but further the EU is opposed to negotiations on broader agricultural trade issues. A group of lawmakers states that any agreement between the EU and the US without agriculture " would not be enough to jeopardize Congressional support. ”
The office of the US Trade Representative, Robert Lightheiser, said that the United States cannot conclude a trade deal with the European Union without agriculture, adding that negotiations have reached an impasse and we should see how things go further.
